Ballyhoura Walking Festival Nominated for Irish Outdoor Experience of the Year
The Ballyhoura Walking Festival has been nominated for Irish Outdoor Experience of the Year at the 2026 Outsider Awards, a national awards programme celebrating the very best of Ireland’s outdoor experiences.
The Outsider Awards celebrate the people, places and experiences that help others connect with Ireland’s great outdoors. To see Ballyhoura recognised at a national level alongside so many inspiring experiences is something we’re incredibly proud of.
A community-led festival
The Ballyhoura Walking Festival has always been about more than just walking. It’s rooted in community, shaped by volunteers, and supported by local landowners, guides, businesses and organisations who all share a passion for the landscape we’re lucky to call home.
Each year, the festival brings together locals and visitors to explore the trails of the Ballyhoura Mountains and surrounding countryside – from gentle rambles to more challenging hikes – while promoting wellbeing, connection to nature and responsible outdoor recreation.
Recognition for rural outdoor tourism
This nomination is a real boost for rural tourism in the region. It highlights the strength of community-led outdoor events and the growing interest in slow, meaningful travel experiences that benefit both people and place.
As Jana Mannion of Ballyhoura Development explains:
“This nomination reflects the collective effort behind the festival. It’s a credit to everyone who gives their time, energy and local knowledge to make it such a special experience year after year.”
