Ballyhoura Mountain Biking Trails Centre to Host 2025 National Downhill Mountain Bike Championships

A First for Limerick and a Huge Win for Adventure Tourism in the Ballyhoura Region

We’re excited to announce that Ballyhoura Mountain Biking Trails Centre will be the proud host of the 2025 National Downhill Mountain Bike Championships, taking place over the weekend of July 26th–27th in the Ballyhoura Mountains, County Limerick.

This is a landmark moment for the region — it’s the first time the championships have ever been held outside of Leinster, and a clear sign that Ballyhoura is firmly on the map as one of Ireland’s premier outdoor adventure destinations.

The event is being organised by Limerick Mountain Biking Club, in partnership with Ballyhoura Trailriders Ltd, and supported by Cycling Ireland. A brand-new race track has been created just for the weekend – a thrilling route that drops from one of Ballyhoura’s highest points right down to the valley floor. It’s designed to test even the most experienced riders, with steep gradients, technical features, and a full-speed descent through the trees.

What Is Downhill Mountain Biking?

For those new to the sport, downhill (DH) mountain biking is a high-adrenaline discipline focused on speed, skill, and gravity. Riders tackle rugged terrain, jumps, drops, berms, rocks, and roots — all while racing against the clock on specially designed bikes.

Who’s Coming?

The championships will welcome up to 200 of Ireland’s top riders, including athletes returning from the UCI World Cup circuit. Among them are:

• Oisín O’Callaghan – currently ranked 7th in the world with The YT Mob

• Henry Kerr – racing with Aon Racing

• Jacob Dickson – of MS Racing MTB

• Blaithin Sweeney – a rising star from the local Limerick Mountain Biking Club, fresh from racing in Europe and aiming for the World Cup circuit next year

This isn’t just about national titles – winners will earn crucial UCI points, helping them qualify for the 2026 World Cup, making this one of the most important downhill events on the Irish calendar.

A Weekend for Everyone

Whether you’re a mountain biking enthusiast or just looking for a great day out in the hills, this event has something for everyone. The Ballyhoura Coillte Trailhead will be buzzing with activity all weekend, including:

• Saturday morning practice runs

• Qualifying and seeding races from 1:45pm

• Sunday finals from 1:45pm, with the fastest riders launching last

• On-site coffee stands, BBQ and hot food

• Designated spectator zones

• Family-friendly atmosphere and facilities

You’ll see some of the fastest riders in the country – and the world – battling it out on a brand-new course, right here in the heart of Ballyhoura.
