Action-Packed Summer Fun in Ballyhoura

Ballyhoura Country is preparing for summer with a series of events that celebrate the cultural, historical and family roots of the area. There’s plenty of choice; whether it’s an evening of traditional music and dance, improving your golf swing, yoga by the lakeside or seeing how you look in chainmail. This is no ordinary summer celebration.

Enjoy an evening of traditional music, song, dance and poetry celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the River Maigue Catchment on June 14 in Croom Civic Centre. A line-up of exceptional artists includes Liam Flanagan (fiddle), Con O’Riain (Flute, Whistle), Singer and Musician Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, puppeteer Des Dillion, storyteller and historian Trevor McCarthy, as well as Ballyhoura Comhaitas.

On June 21 show off your form by joining the Ballyhoura Heritage and Environment for their 2019 Golf Classic in Mitchelstown Golf Club. The event is run as a fundraiser for several large, community-focused tourism projects in the Ballyhoura area. First prize is entry to the JP McManus Pro-Am Prequalifier (Pro-Am 2020 Entrance Cap included). With lots more great prizes on offer for the golfer in your life. Pre-booking is essential. Lough Gur has a series of events to inspire as you celebrate the summer solstice. Wake up to yoga by the lakeshore on Friday, June 21. Maggie May from Yogalife Limerick will guide gentle awakening yoga to greet the Solstice. On Saturday, June 22 Lough Gur Development, in conjunction with LCGA, will host ‘Forgotten Existence – Art Talk by Robert Ryan’ ahead of his upcoming solo exhibition of Robert’s work, running from June 20 - 25 August 2019 at Limerick City Gallery of Art. This talk by Robert in the Lough Gur Heritage Centre will discuss the exhibition, the inspiration and origins for his work, and the life of an artist in 2019 Ireland. ‘Forgotten Existence’ will take place at Lough Gur Heritage Centre from 5 - 7pm.

The Lough Gur fairies have agreed to host a special fairy ball on Sunday, June 23 from 1 - 4pm to add to the magic. Bring your princes and princesses to join in the Enchanted Family Fairy Day. Lough Gur will come alive to celebrate family life, dreams and create magical memories to last a lifetime. There is lots of folklore and customs which will be retold on the day. Everyone is encouraged to dress up for the occasion. A King / Queen of the ball will be crowned at each dance. There will be face painting, fairy door painting, fairy trail maps and storytelling. A storm of steel will descend as warriors, craftspeople and traders descend on the Battle of Kilmallock on July 13. Witness a medieval fighting tournament - the first ever competitive Viking tournament in Ireland - where armour clad warriors battle for victory in single and team combat. Ballyhoura Trailhead will host a unique Family Adventure Day on July 21. An action packed family orientated programme will include activities like orienteering and mountain biking for a range of different ages. The event will highlight the amenities and outdoor recreation that the Ballyhoura region has to offer. Local vendors will be on site on the day supplying food and drink to hungry participants. Activities such as Hoverball Archery, Kickdart and Giant Jenga will also be available.
