Griston Bog
Ballylanders wildlife bog is situated at Griston Bog on the west side of the village. It is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, bees and insects and different types of water life, some of which are now in danger of extinction in many parts of the world. It is rich in insect life which in turn supports many birds and other animals such as frogs, newts and lizards.
To facilitate easy viewing of the park, a special wooden walkway has been put in place which visitors can use as they guide themselves through this peatland with the help of the informative interpretative boards.
The bog now boasts impressive purpose outdoor classrooms where teachers and classes can explore and learn about nature in unique and inspiring surroundings. The site is compact, facilitating safe and easy management of the group, yet sufficiently varied and exciting to give children a real feel for the great outdoors. Wildlife is very accessible and easily observed at Griston Bog.
Griston Bog is fully equipped as a classroom and science lab. An exciting Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme, led by experienced guides, is available. It can accommodate up to 40 children at one time.

Visiting with Your Dog? Here’s What you need to know:
Griston Bog is a designated conservation area with sensitive habitats, including breeding birds and native wildlife. We welcome well-behaved dogs, but please follow these important guidelines to protect the environment and ensure a safe, respectful experience for all:
Dog-Walking Rules at Griston Bog:
- Keep Dogs on Leads: All dogs must be on a short lead (max 2 metres) at all times. This helps protect vulnerable wildlife and nesting birds.
- Clean Up Waste: Please pick up after your dog and take waste home with you—there are no bins on site.
- Restricted Breeds: Under Irish law, certain breeds (e.g. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds) must be muzzled and on a strong lead, and handled by someone aged 16+.
- Identification: All dogs must wear a collar with the owner's name and address.
- Control & Behaviour: Dogs must be under effective control at all times. Avoid bringing unsocialised or aggressive dogs.
Good Practices:
- Bring water and poo bags.
- Avoid visits during hot weather, bogland can be deceptive in heat.
- Ensure your dog is comfortable around other dogs and people.
Thank you for helping us protect Griston Bog’s natural beauty and wildlife
