Ballyhoura Science Day

The Ballyhoura Science Day is a free family fun day on the 16th of November, 11am – 4pm, at the Croom Sport’s Complex. The Science day is part of national science week, hosted by Ballyhoura Development, and funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The aim of the Ballyhoura Science Day is to engage children and families alike with Science – through fun and interactive workshops, games and activities. There will also be a free return bus from Hospital and Kilmallock – see end of the page for details.

The Science of Superheroes

 

Dr. Barry Fitzgerald is a superhero scientist, host of the podcast BingeWatch Academy: Superhero Science, and has given hundreds of talks at schools, universities, and events such as Dutch Comic Con, the Galway International Arts Festival and more.  Dr. Fitzgerald is the author of the popular books Secrets of Superhero Science and Secret Science of Santa Claus, with his new book – How to Build and Iron Man Suit launching this October. Dr. Fitzgerald will be showcasing a variety of superhero gadgets at the Ballyhoura Science day, presents a series of exciting talks that are a must for all superhero fans. Dr. Fitzgerald will also be giving away copies of his book on the day.

DR. Fitzgerald will be present until 1:30 PM on the day. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Mobile Laboratory

 

Roseanne Leddy from Lismore Heritage Centre will have an exciting workshop – giving your budding mad scientists the chance to get their hands dirty and take part in a range of interactive experiments.

Climbing Wall

 

 

There will be an indoor climbing wall running all day giving your family the chance to test their physical intelligence as well as mental at the Science Day!

Minimum age applies.

Full instruction and equipment given.

Wild Encounters will be on site with an exotic mini-zoo – featuring snakes, reptiles, bunnies, birds and more! Come and get a close look at some of the species threatened by climate change, and learn what you can do to help. Wild Encounters are dedicated to educating, entertaining, and stimulating people of all ages about the natural world through up close and personal experience with animals – that are sure to make an impact and create memories!  

The Community Food Initiative will be in attendance to promote healthy living and eating at their workshop – showing you healthy lunchbox options, giveaways and more!

There will be a focus on seasonal eating and the option to sign up to free cookery classes.

Kiddie Craft Corner

 

 

Is the bustle of the Science Day too much for smaller the tots? Why not bring them over to the Kiddie Craft Corner and help them make a range of Christmas decorations and crafts. Facepainting and children’s entertainment also available.

The Tralee Bay Wetlands are bringing their outdoor classroom experience to the Ballyhoura Science Fair – highlighting the importance of Wetland habitats, Ireland’s native species – with an exciting show and tell session.

They will also be showcasing their 2019 “Year of the Bee” program and sharing the importance of pollinators with everyone.
