Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO) is a multi-award-winning Irish government sponsored initiative established to help people of Irish heritage abroad connect with the Irish parish from where either they or their ancestors first originated in Ireland. An Taoiseach, the Irish Prime Minister, Enda Kenny TD, launched the Programme nationally on March 14, 2012. Ireland Reaching Out is a voluntary, non-profit community-based charitable organisation.
The Ireland Reaching Out (IRO or Ireland XO) Project is an Irish government sponsored initiative established to connect people of Irish heritage abroad with the Irish parish communities from where their ancestors emigrated in Ireland.
The Irish Diaspora has often been recognised as a very significant asset who place a huge value on this country and their connections to it. However, when they visit, we at home don’t always reach out to them. Ireland Reaching Out wants to change this perception, connecting our tribe in a way that will enrich all of our lives for the economic, social, and cultural benefit of the Irish people both at home and abroad.
The idea is very simple: instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to return to Ireland to trace their roots as is popularly done today, it proposes to enable local communities, largely through volunteer effort, to proactively engage with their Diaspora. This reverse genealogy entails the tracing and recording of all the people who left and seeking out their living descendants worldwide. Those identified or recognised as persons of Irish heritage or affiliation are invited to become part of a new extended Irish society.
Ballyhoura Country is actively engaging with Parishes across the area to become part of the reaching out process
Communities involved include Kilfinane, Kilbehenny, Kildorrery, Lough Gur, Knockainey, Mitchelstown, Ballygiblin, Bruff, Pallasgrean, Murroe and Kilmallock
