Lying in the middle of this picturesque village the great fortress is certainly impressive. Third largest of Irelands 13th century castles, the great walls conjure up visions of men at war, knights in shining armour, the thunder of horses hooves as cavalry swooped down on an encircled enemy. To the south is the mighty entrance gateway, still retaining traces of the former portcullis and close by the mighty drum tower at the south west corner.
